Each fall and spring season Girls on the Run Charlotte identifies and selects a dynamic group of coaches to lead each of our teams of 8-15 girls. Coaches are parents, teachers, school administrators, college students, and other community members who are committed to developing and celebrating our girls.

Coach Overview

The coach is a volunteer position that works with a team of coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run (or Heart & Sole) curriculum to program participants. Each team is led by 2-4 coaches, one of which is CPR/First Aid Certified. Coaches can be female or male. This position is a commitment of approximately 2-4 hours per week for the duration of our 10-week program season.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must consent to and complete a background check
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training (both online and in-person)
  • Attend 1-2 practices per week
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Prepare, organize and supervise weekly lessons (curriculum provided)
  • Collaborate with other coaches for successful lesson delivery
  • Facilitate communication with parents/guardians of program participants
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K

Ambassadors

Coach Ambassadors (formerly Team Adelaide) are a group of experienced coaches who are not currently coaching, but are looking to remain involved with Girls on the Run. This is the perfect opportunity for a former coach who no longer has the schedule availability to coach each week, but wants to contribute something each season. Candidates must have at least one season of coaching experience, to serve as a Coach Ambassador.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have served at least one season as a GOTR Coach
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • May be male or female
  • Complete an online and in-person coach training
  • Must consent to and complete a background check
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with break-out sessions at coach Training, providing feedback to new coaches as they practice a lesson
  • Serve as a Substitute Coach on a designated day in assigned geographic region
  • Conduct Site Visits
  • Represent Girls on the Run at community events such as run clubs, volunteer fairs, etc.
  • Utilize Social Media to promote volunteer opportunities and Girls on the Run events

 

Coach Ambassadors may commit to one season, or one school-year, depending on their availability. The deadline to join the fall 2017 team of Ambassadors is August 15th

Junior Coach Overview

The Junior Coach is a volunteer position for high school students to assist the Head and Assistant Coaches at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Junior Coach must be 16-18 years old
  • Must be female
  • Must be a high school student
  • Complete an online and in-person coach training
  • Able to attend practices once or twice per week
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down of games and lessons
  • Provide one-on-one attention to program participants
  • Participate in games and workouts with the girls
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K

WHEN AND WHERE IS COACH TRAINING?

Several coach training sessions are offered each season. Coaches may select their training date within the coach application.

CAN I CHOOSE THE SITE WHERE I COACH?

Coaches may indicate a preference for the site at which they would like to coach. If coaches do not have a preference, we will assign them to a location in need of volunteers. Click here for a list of sites that need coaches.

WILL I BE REIMBURSED FOR COACHING EXPENSES?

Each team receives a site allowance of up to $15 per girl. Coaches must submit all receipts related to program expenses as they make purchases throughout the season, and they will be reimbursed for an amount not to exceed the site allowance.
